Muriel Winifred Macdonald (Scott)
Muriel Winifred Macdonald (nee Scott)
Trailblazing radio operator, singer, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, mentor, pragmatist and nurturer passed away peacefully on Saturday December 15, 2018 in Burlington, Ontario. Muriel was predeceased by her loving husband Norman. Beloved mother of Laura Kupferschmidt (Gerry), Cassie Kraemer (the late Raymond), Margaret (George Hall), the late Reta Flanagan (John), the late Archie (Ellen), Paul (Kathy Isford), Carl (the late Judy), Janet Magdanz (John), Theresa Buitenhuis (Brian) and Tim. Cherished grandmother of 26 and great-grandmother of 26. Predeceased by her parents, Isaac & Laura Scott, and her 7 siblings.
Muriel was born in Toronto in 1921. Following graduation from high school, Muriel worked at the Canada Customs Office before becoming one of the first female Radio Operators at Malton Airport during WWII. Muriel met Norman Macdonald while carpooling to Malton and they married in 1945. Norman completed a BASc at the Ontario Agricultural College and they subsequently moved to Burwash prior to settling in Guelph where they raised their 10 children.
Muriel’s passion for music started as a member of the Toronto Children’s Choir and followed a path through light opera productions and choirs, culminating in Elder Hostel productions of Gilbert & Sullivan. She also spent considerable time playing bridge, reading and teaching children with disabilities to swim. Muriel’s generosity of spirit, grateful heart, grace, determination and wittiness are gifts her children will always treasure and strive to emulate.
Special thanks to the amazing staff at Billings Court Manor in Burlington. Your kindness is greatly appreciated and will always be remembered.
