Mary Williamson

Betty Williamson (Stubbs) is my first cousin, and my last living first cousin with the exception of Tom Williamson who has lived most of his adult life in Montreal. From the 1930s to 1956 we regularly met at family reunions, always held at Aunt Emily Williamson’s house on Water Street (now Lakeshore, and still standing). In 1935 Aunt Emily became the first female lawyer in Halton County. On every second Christmas we would meet at Aunt Emily’s – usually over twenty of us – and then walk the short distance to the Estaminet Restaurant (now Emma’s Back Porch) for a Williamson family Christmas dinner. Each Fall Betty accompanied her mother, who was an amazing cook, to county fairs in the Burlington area where Aunt Lillian almost always won red and blue ribbons for her baking and pickling, and flowers. Up until about ten years ago Betty shared with me her mother’s recipes including one for bran muffins that had been published in a local newspaper.
