Obituary for Bernard "Ben" John MacDougall

Bernard "Ben" John MacDougall
January 8, 1926 to December 8, 2018
92 years well-lived. Following a brief illness, Ben is now reunited in heaven with the love of his life, Flo. Beloved Dad of Anne (John), Bob, Francis (Linda), and Mary (Neil). Loving Papa of Meredith (Colin), Kevin (Lindsay), Aileen, Shealyn (Brent), Grace, Corey and Jake, and Great Papa of Jax. Ben, the second youngest of 12 children, was raised in Montreal, and will be fondly remembered by his sister Mary, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Ben is predeceased by his siblings Luke, Martina, Bob, Vincent, Angelus, Angus, Joe, Alex, Margaret and Teresa. Ben graduated as an electrical engineer from McGill University, was an officer in the Naval Reserve, and a gentleman in all aspects of his life. Ben and his wife Flo danced through 53 years of marriage, teaching us how to love with respect and generosity. His career as a Professional Engineer spanned 40 years, including positions at English Electric, Dominion Glass and Consumers Glass. Ben was known for his sharp mind and quick wit, and he could create humour in any situation. He was a glass half-full kind of guy and was especially delighted when the glass contained wine or beer. He lived each day with great joy and had a welcoming and generous spirit, always willing to make time for others. Ben was a master of the pun, and his prodigious memory enabled him to spout a quote, poem, story or risqué limerick to suit any occasion. Ben was an amazing husband, father, papa, brother and friend. We are so grateful for the village that surrounded our dad, enriching him with friendship and support. He moved with grace through each stage of his life with faith, kindness, love and laughter. We are blessed for every day we had him in our lives and are without question better for it. Friends and family are invited to join us for a Visitation and Celebration at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block North of City Hall), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Wednesday, December 12th from 5- 9p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Raphael’s Church, 4072 New Street, Burlington on Thursday, December 13th at 10:30a.m. followed by a reception at the church. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery at 2:30p.m. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
