McNIE (MacKAY, nee Sosulski), Bernice

Passed away peacefully after a short illness at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the age of 87. Predeceased by husband Jack McNie in 2006 and husband Vern MacKay in 1987. Also predeceased by daughter Sharon MacKay and sister June Dyche. Bernice will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her family. Beloved sister of Jenny Sosulski. Loving mother to Judy (Roy) MacDonnell, Gord (Debbie) MacKay, Caroline (Paul) Falconi, and Cathy (Rick) Adams. Devoted grandma to David (Elizabeth), Natalie (Dan), Katie (Simon), Erin (Josh), Bradley, Jonathan and Matthew and great grandma to Cole, Jack, Evelyn, Isla and Mariah. Sadly missed by Jack’s children Fran (Rick) Adams, Heather (Grant Sutherland) McNie, Scott (Nobuko) McNie, John (Desiree Chen), and Mary Ritchie as well as Jack’s grandchildren Clarence (Yael), Takuma (Shuko), John (Akiho) and great grandchildren Jack, Ayla, Moe and Sunny. Bernice lit up a room with her energy and smile, always ready with a listening ear and adventures to share. She was a friend to many and inspiration to all who met her. She taught primary and high school for the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and was an active member of the UCW at Westdale United Church in Hamilton for many years. Bernice and Vern were consummate teachers. They loved to play tennis and bridge and enjoyed camping trips with the family especially to Vern’s roots in the Maritimes. Bernice and Jack shared interests in the arts, politics, sports and dancing, travelling extensively, and with an annual trek north to Killarney Lodge in Algonquin Park. Special thanks to Sunrise of Oakville and the Palliative Care Unit at OTMH for their wonderful care and compassion. Visitation will be held at 12 p.m. at Smith’s Funeral Home at 1167 Guelph Line on Saturday December 8, 2018 followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m; reception to follow. If so desired donations to Parkinson Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
