McMahon, Lawrence (Larry) Russel

Passed suddenly at his home in Waterdown, Ontario. He is predeceased by his wife, Patricia Eillen and his brother Ken McMahon. He is survived by his brother Harry, his sister Shirley, his daughter Susan (husband Harris), his son Steven (wife Lori) and his granddaughter Jennifer, as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario on April 27, 1927 but lived most of his life in Burlington, Ontario where he was active with the volunteer fire department and many other clubs and organizations. He was proud to tell people that he had run as an NDP candidate in a past provincial election. Larry helped many people over the last thirty years in their battle with alcohol addiction. He was a proud member of the Graphic Arts Union and was always an advocate for member’s rights. He was also a member of the Oddfellows, an organization that attempts to “improve and elevate the character of mankind by promoting the principles of friendship, love, truth, faith, hope, charity and universal justice.” Larry was always keen to assist others through any difficult situation that they may be experiencing. He made a point of keeping in touch with the many people he had come in contact with over his long and winding journey. In his younger days he was a Harley driver and often told the story of how he sold his bike to buy a wedding ring for the love of his life, Patricia. He loved roughing it and took regular camping holidays with his family. Before giving up his license following knee surgery, Larry was always busy giving others transportation and making sure they could get to meetings or just get to where they were going. While his active lifestyle often kept him away from family, he was famous for his preparation of the roast beef dinner on Sunday. He enjoyed listening to police and fire calls on his scanner and kept pace with technology as an avid YouTube listener. He will be greatly missed by his family and many in the community whose lives he touched. In keeping with Larry’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block North of City Hall), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 12 – 1 p.m. followed by a Funeral Service in the Chapel at 1 p.m. As an expression of sympathy, donations to Alcoholics Anonymous would be greatly appreciated.
