Condolences

Condolence From: Milton Howe
Condolence: I was saddened by Don's death and touched by the memorial service on Saturday. I first worked with and befriended Don in 1989 at what was then called Continental Insurance. He was a remarkable man and fascinating conversationalist. A person you would never forget. He made a huge impression in everything he did. In 2001 or so he invited me to join his pub quiz team and for the next 15+ years it was my pleasure to spend Monday evenings with him over beer and trivia. His knowledge and memory over a vast array of subjects left a lasting impression. In recent years he retired from the team but served as captain emeritus and came out as a substitute when he could. He was a riveting storyteller and always had an interesting encounter to recount or an adventure to describe, accompanied by his infectious and unforgettable laugh. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by the many who knew him. Rest in peace.

Condolence: Tom and I were profoundly saddened at the news of Don's passing and extend our condolences to his family. Like so many others, we met Don through orienteering in the 80's. Don was passionate about so many things - orienteering, scrabble, work, the outdoors, trees, birds and so much more. There was always laughter when Don was around. He did have a quirky sense of humor! So many wonderful memories.

Condolence: Lynn – Natalie and I were so saddened at Don’s passing. Our deepest sympathy to you, Michael, Alex and families. Although we hadn’t seen Don in a while he was a great friend through the years. Fond memories of Don leading us on trips through the back roads of Kings county, getting us totally lost, quizzing us on where we thought we were, then turning the next corner and there we would be at some well known spot. Living with Don, Keith and Mike in Toronto, the four of us playing Reach for the Top against the kids on TV, too much fun. We’ll cherish the memories.

Condolence: Trudy and I meet Don through orienteering. When we first went to out-of-town events, Don would invite us out with his friends to check out local restaurants. We had our first Peruvian food found by Don at the Flying Pig, Cincinnati. We raced in California and there was Don racing and touring with his friend Svetka. Don was a great orienteer and a top official, serving as the head controller at the APOC event in Alberta. We have missed Don at recent events and were very sad when we heard of Don's passing.

Condolence: I was fortunate to have known Don for over 33 years and have many fond memories of him, including Lombard golf day, countless lunches, golfing with Sid and Ron, celebrating Alexander Keith's birthday over a few beers, and talks at work! His dry sense of humor, and love and appreciation of the outdoors were some of the many traits I will always remember. He liked to laugh and never took himself too seriously...a perfect friend, who will be missed by many, but never forgotten. My deepest condolences to his mom, Lynn and the rest of his family.

Condolence: Lynn, I'm so sorry for the loss of Don. It's been quite a few years since I saw him and he hadn't changed a bit. We were good friends in school. We played golf as kids at Ken-Wo and had a lot of laughs. I shall cherish my memories of him.

Condolence: Lynn - I am shocked to learn of Don's death! How can this be? I haven't been to Toronto in a long time, but we would occasionally meet for drinks and play bar trivia and get caught up on what's new with old school mates. I might get the odd Facebook note or have time for a quick hello in departures at Halifax International. Today I am remembering all the summers at Ken Wo, the endless packer parties at Keith's or in your parents' den and drives in the Zephyr, when we could have lights and wipers on or radio and lights on, but not all three at once. Playing 5-card stud with Don he would analyze the cards and calculate the odds of having the card to complete a pair, a straight or a flush. We had such fun. I may not have seen much of him in recent years, but I shall miss him. I am sorry for your loss.

Condolence: My condolences on Don's death. We attended KCA together and while we didn't chum around together we were always on good terms. During a KCA reunion at the King's Arms Pub in Kentville in the late '80d or early '90s, he told me he thought I was the one who gave him his nickname, Flash. It was actually Mike Forbes, so Allan Lynch informed me earlier today.

Condolence: We were shocked and saddened to hear of Don’s passing. Don was an institution in the orienteering community. He rarely missed a local meet and we enjoyed his company on orienteering adventures across Canada, the US and Scotland. He freely shared his technical expertise with all and was happy to discuss details surrounding control placement from events I barely remember attending. I remember him saying something like, remember control 201 at such in such a location in 1987? If they had placed it 100 m higher in the re-entrant it would have been a great control. Or how excited he got when a control had 5 good route choices! Our children also commented how Don was happy to chat with them and help them on a tricky part of a map while out on a course. Orienteering was definitely one of his passions. We fondly remember his dry guffaw laugh and he could be counted on to share many a humourous story drawn from his impeccable memory. Don, may you always run in sunlit forests. You will be dearly missed. Cathy and Clive

Condolence: Don loved the outdoors, and was particularly keen about wild orchids. Through his involvement with the Toronto Orienteering Club, he created various maps as well as forums for new members. I wish I had made time to get to know him better.

Condolence: Don was one of the first people I came to know a when I moved to Canada 20 years ago and it was our shared love for orienteering that made that encounter possible. Ever since then we have exchanged a few words every time we have ran in to each other. He was a really nice man and will be missed.

Condolence: We have orienteered with Don for years and missed him when he wasn't able to compete at recent events. He had an eye for detail and a talent for choosing efficient routes through the forest. It was always interesting to chat with Don after a race and hear his thoughts. Our heartfelt condolences to his family.

Condolence: We have missed Don at the Hamilton Scrabble Club and we are very saddened to hear of his passing. He was a worthy competitor with a vast knowledge of the weirdest words. I personally really enjoyed the 2 years in a row that I played Trivia with him competitively and though we didn't win he helped our team come close. Our heartfelt condolences to his family.
