I was so shocked to hear from Raymond Chung about the passing of Don (thank you, Raymond!). Don was a relatively young man, and to me it always seems unfair when young people have to leave the rest of us. My condolences go to his family in particular. Don was, to me , the perfect example of a gentleman. He had such a balanced personality, never shouting or complaining or boasting. No matter how a particular orienteering meet went for him, he, seemingly anyway, never blamed the organizer or the course setter or the terrain or the weather etc. for any perceived problems. One thing that stood out for me was Don's keen interest in orienteering route choices. At any opportunity, he would pull out a map or maps from a stack he always seemed to have with him and peruse them, alone or with other runners, looking for optional route choices etc. He was fascinated with that, and really enjoyed it. Over the 25 years or so that I went to orienteering meets, there was hardly ever one where Don didn't also participate. And I would imagine that beyond 1999 he went to many more that I didn't attend - a very keen participant and member of the club. Don, I hope that wherever you may now be you can continue enjoying looking at maps and route choices! Maybe I can enjoy that with you eventually. That would be nice. Take care, Andy Lamm, Toronto Orienteering Club.

The sun came out, and shone all around you. The wind blew, a warm summer breeze all around you. The trees swayed gently, whispering words of love all around you. And the music played, a serenade from the stars all around you. Donald and I worked directly together for six years. Not only were we colleagues, but friends as well I hope. I believe life is what we make of it, and Donald did just that. He made a life filled with family, friends, hobbies and experiences. His was a full life. His was a good life. I shall miss you Donald and will always imagine you walking along the Bruce Trail with the sun on your face and the wind at your back. Safe passage in your travels my dear friend. May we meet again in another lifetime. Love always, Pinal

Don has been a friend, fellow traveller, master of the off-the-beaten-track backroads journeys and much more for close to 40 years for me. He always inspired and was a great orienteering outdoors navigator. I am shocked and saddened by Don’s passing, having just seen him in August in good spirits and with a positive attitude. To say he will be missed by me, my family and all in the orienteering community is a huge understatement. A loss of a great soul. Sincere condolences to Don’s entire family and community. Eugene
