Obituary for Barry Horne

Barry Horne
Horne, Barry

Passed away suddenly on September 7, 2018 in Bracebridge, at the age of 55. Beloved husband of Karen for 30 years. Loving father to Kaitlin, Jordyn and Jakob. Cherished son of Rosemary (David). Son-in-law to the late Bev and Dave. Dear brother of Rick (Amy), Peter (Caroline), and Debbie (Sheila). Brother-in-law to David (Julie) and Danny (Alison). Cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Barry was a proud part-owner of the family business, Horne Construction, where he spent 22 years working side by side with his two brothers. In his career, he grew into an accomplished contractor and a carpenter, not only by trade, but as a life-long hobby as well.

Also known as “Papa Horne,” Barry was the very definition of a community and a family man. He consistently took on leadership roles in all his endeavours and pushed people to do their best. A generous man who always put others first, he was an attentive listener and known for giving sage advice.

A pillar in the St. Catharines hockey community, Barry spent years volunteering at every level of the sport, from fundraising to sponsorship, coaching and administration. He was integral to the development of the Chaos Girls Hockey League and spent several years as the president of the organization.

Barry enjoyed traveling around the world with family and friends, but his favourite place to visit was certainly his cottage in Bala. Warm and magnetic, he befriended many of his neighbours and extended his vast circle of friends in cottage country.

Visitation will be held at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 454 Highway #8 (east of Millen Road) STONEY CREEK on Thursday, September 13, 2018 from 6 - 8 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre (440 Locust Street, Burlington) on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 4 - 7 p.m. with tributes at 4:30 p.m. Please come casual and comfortable, just as Barry would prefer. For those who wish, donations in memory of Barry may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada or Hospice Niagara in lieu of flowers, and would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
