Obituary for Gaspare "Gus" Carubba

Gaspare "Gus" Carubba
CARUBBA, Gaspare “Gus” -

Passed away peacefully with family by his side at his home in Burlington on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at the age of 82. Loving and devoted husband of Sharon Carubba (nee Smith). Cherished father of Jeffrey Carubba (Sheila) and Steve Carubba. Proud grandfather of Grace, Chloe and Lily. Dear brother of Joanne Rose Randles (Pat), and Sarah Varrasso (Alfredo).

We would like to offer our special gratitude to his amazing health team led by Dr. Tim Salter, Dr. Ian Darcel and Karen Antoni. Gus received excellent palliative care from his nurses Jane, Norma and Kelly.

Gus was born in Racalmuto Sicily. He grew up very fast during the times of war and took on the responsibility of caring for his family. It was a sad time for Gus as he lost four siblings during these very difficult times, something he always felt responsible for, even though he was the youngest. Soon he moved to Rome where he studied for 6 years before coming to Canada at the tender age of 15, leaving behind his homeland and his extended family members, held close to his heart until his last breath, Lucia (Dante), Daniella, Toto, Mariella, Bruno, Valeria, Luigi (Roseanne), Calogero. Gus continued to return to Sicily until 2017 to visit and share his memories and love with his family. His last trip with his family was the highlight of his life for him to be able to share all that meant so much to him.

Gus retired from a long successful career at Stelco. After his retirement he loved summers at his beloved cottage on Georgian Bay and winters in Florida, where he was lucky enough to spend all his time with many friends and having happy days with his two brothers-in-law, now deceased, Gary Smith (Sandra) and Bob Smith (Glenda). Gus was very popular because he was always willing to pass on his culinary skills, giving lessons to all who would listen. He was very famous and passed on his skill at baking typical Sicilian recipes, threatening those he taught not to give away his secrets, even though he himself showed anyone who asked. Such the man he was! A true gem and we all loved him so, and we will always miss him.

Gus loved all his many nieces and nephews, wanted to hear all about them and was proud of each and every one of them. He always had faith that you could accomplish anything and he taught us well, he was a good example to us all.

Gus worked very hard to care for his family and spent all his life trying to see what you needed, and working to help you get there. We are very grateful to have had his love, his devotion, his lessons and his kindness to all. His children’s happiness has always been his goal.

As per Gus’s wishes there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. Condolences, memories, photos may be left at www.smithsfh.com

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal!
