Obituary for Maria Richter (Walz)

Maria Richter (Walz)
RICHTER, Maria (nee Wälz)
Passed away as result of a motor vehicle accident in Burlington, on Friday June 15, 2018 at the age of 94. Beloved wife of the late Albert Richter (1993). Loving mother of Ingrid Richter of Ottawa, Rick Richter (Ana Peixinho) of Pierrefonds, Quebec, the late Edith Summers (1997) and the late Brigitte Richter (1944). Cherished Oma of Michelle and Lisa Summers, Nathalie Klinck, Conrad Peixinho-Richter (Zyarina Zya), Calvin Peixinho-Richter. Much loved aunt and friend to the Thillmann family (Alberta), the Stiefel, Richter and Damman families (Germany) Daniel Klinck, Lynn Ivutt, Larry Walsh and many others. Maria was a dedicated and engaged mother, always curious about all aspects of life, from science and nature to current events. She was keenly interested in the work and activities of her children, grandchildren, family and friends from across Canada and Germany. Residing in Burlington for 25 years, Maria was a cherished neighbor with an exceptional gift for friendship. She warmly welcomed anyone and everyone for conversation, coffee and kuchen. We richly enjoyed her spätzle, home-grown tomatoes, walnut schnapps and gifts of beautifully hand-knitted socks! As an honored volunteer at the Burlington Seniors Centre she was proud to work with the group producing a wide variety of quilts, clothing, bags and other items to support the Centre’s good work. She was a skilled seamstress and loved to complete, restore and repurpose knitting and craft projects others had let go. Maria was raised on a farm in Bessarabia (now Romania), and survived turbulent times as a refugee in Europe. After settling in Canada, she and Albert spent many years dairy and beef farming in B.C. and Ontario. Maria had a life-long passion for botany and was a bottomless source of knowledge about plants, trees and natural medicines. Her personal warmth, great wisdom and acute understanding of humanity will be deeply missed. The family would like to express their sincere thanks for the exceptionally sensitive care rendered by the staff and clinicians of the Hamilton General Hospital Intensive Care Unit. Private Cremation. Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street, (one block north of City Hall), BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333 on Friday, June 22, 2018 from 7-9 p.m. where a Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 1 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a tree will be planted in her honor. Donations for it can be made to the Royal Botanical Gardens Tribute and Memorial Program https://www.rbg.ca/donate#tribute. www.smithsfh.com
