Condolences

Condolence From: Lori Sirianni
Condolence: I'm so very sorry to learn that Sonya has passed on, and offer my condolences to her family. Sonya and I went to Orchard Park together and I remember her fondly from our time together as teenagers. She was beautiful, vivacious, funny and a genuinely nice person whom I recall laughing with so many times. More than anything, I remember her sense of humor. She was fun to be with. My gosh it's been 35 years and she's still one of the members of our large circle of friends I so clearly remember despite losing touch after high school. Sonya was far too young to pass, and my sympathies are with her family and all who loved her.

May you all find peace in your cherished memories and know that her love is with you always.

Condolence: No Matter the Distance Ever since I can remember, my Auntie Sonya has never been far away. Quite literally, growing up only one house in between us, I knew that if I ever needed something, she would be there. She was there when I’d call on Johnny and Syd to come play. She was there for the birthday parties, soccer games, holidays and long weekends at the trailer. When she needed an extra egg for baking, we were there. It amazed me how many times she would be short just one egg, but her bran muffins were the best, so it was definitely necessary. As I reflect on my favourite memories with my aunt, I feel so lucky to have had such a powerful woman in my life. A successful business owner, I remember spending my “Career Day” at her studio, learning from her and watching her go about her daily tasks. She had a lot of energy and loved to dance. I have specific memories dancing with her in the living room, in her car and on the dancefloor at Slovenski Park. Sitting around the campfire, lounging by the water in her yellow bikini, playing baseball and hosting multiple guests are just a few of the memories I have of her at the trailer. She was a smart risk taker, so it was no surprise when she’d beat us all at blackjack at Grandma’s house. Of course, we also shared countless laughs. I think that anyone who has met my aunt knows that her sense of humour, playful personality and smile was contagious. We will all cherish our special moments with her. After high school, I made the move to Toronto. Even though the distance between us was greater in kilometres, I never stopped feeling her support. A few years ago I participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. During a leg of the ride that was particularly strenuous for me, I received a text message from Auntie Sonya. She told me how proud she was, that I was so brave and to stay strong throughout. I wasn’t expecting it but really needed to hear that. She motivated me with words that I would later say to her, for support in her journey. When my aunt was diagnosed with cancer, it was a harsh shock to the entire family. We all dealt with our sadness in our own way and there was a lot of struggle. Auntie Sonya was a fighter and we were going to win this battle together. Just like her mom, Syd took on a lot of responsibility and I believe was my aunt’s best weapon. Only about two weeks ago, I moved to The Netherlands. There was an ocean between us. It’s been difficult to deal with her loss from such a great distance, she’s always been so close by. My aunt wanted me to stay here, and for Trish to stay in Australia. No matter where we were in the world, she knew that we were still with her. The love is so strong, that the distance simply did not matter. Now she is so close, I can feel her. Love from Amsterdam, Kristen xo
