Obituary for Alan McLean Smart

SMART, Alan McLean
January 13, 1931 – May 27, 2018
Passed away peacefully at Creek Way Village in Burlington, Ontario with his loving family by his side in his 88th year. He was the devoted husband of Trisha, who predeceased him two years ago. He was the loving father of Hazel Smart of Waterloo, Brigitte Zaric-Smart of Switzerland, Heather Smart-Shewfelt of Kincardine and Ian Smart of Burlington. Devoted Grandfather of Nanouchka Zaric of Switzerland and Sadie (Derek) and Elsie (Brady) Shewfelt of Kincardine. Loving brother of Hilda Birse of Etobicoke. He leaves behind extended family in Canada and Scotland along with many business associates in the woodworking industry worldwide. Alan was a pioneer in the woodworking machinery industry. With major contributions to the start of Galt Canadian Woodworking Machinery and founder of Smart and Godin of Galt which he later sold to HOMAG Canada for whom he continued to work with until retirement. He was well respected in the woodworking machinery industry and strongly believed a handshake meant more than a signature. His love of family was always evident whether he was home or on the road. If you were a friend of Alan’s, you were a friend for life. A funeral service will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 10a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Port Nelson Church (Burlington) or the Joseph Brant Wellness House of Burlington. www.smithsfh.com
