Condolence: I just learned the sad news of Mr. Spearin's passing. He taught me grade 12 English, and he was one of the kindest teachers I have ever had. He was patient with us, and he nurtured us. I still think of him fondly today, many years on. I feel lucky to have had class with him. Basically everything that Moi and Avis said below, and more. My sincere condolences. --class of 1982-83, SWC

Condolence: I apologize for leaving this so late, but I just this moment learned of Mr Spearin's passing from a posting on the SWC Facebook page. My condolences to Mr. Spearin's family. The world lost a real gentleman and a caring educator. Mr. Spearin took the time with me and my fellow Valedictorian, to help us compose our Address to the graduating class of 1983. He was never my teacher, but I count myself fortunate to have been able to spend some time with him where he freely gave his time, experience, thoughts, and assistance to two soon to be graduates who had no idea about what a Valedictorian speech should look like. We discussed quotes from Churchill himself, and he guided us, yet also allowed us the freedom to add our own humour, and experiences to the Address. Your family knows how fortunate they were to have had this kind, gentle man in your lives. He will be missed. Moi Vienneau, Class of 1982-1983

Condolence: As the volunteer Head of the Cooking staff at Mens'Breakfasts at East Plains United Church, Don always was a marvelous team-builder and gentle motivator. His kind sense of humor and clear-headedness made our food preparations fun and productive. My (overseas) kids, who were Aldershot classmates of Chris and Michael, join Barbara and me in expressions of sadness over the terribly unexpected loss.

Condolence: I remember well playing monthly duplicate bridge with Don and Jean in the 70's.The time would go by so fast in those days when we all had young families and both parents worked, that we had to mark our calendars as to whose house we were going to play the next mth. My condolences go to the whole family, but very much to Jean as I always enjoyed talking to her and receiving her family news. Sincerely , Gerry Welstead, Alliston On.

Condolence: Mr. Spearin was my Grade 13 English teacher at Hamilton Collegiate Institute in 1969-70. I was 17 and fresh from 12 years of all-girls convent schooling, so having a male teacher was a novelty for me and even somewhat intimidating. But he was infinitely kind and patient, and had a lovely gentle way of teaching. And he was much more handsome than the nuns! I went on to major in English in university and enjoyed a 40-year career in journalism, thanks, in part, to his instruction in the beauty of the language. I have never forgotten him and was delighted to run into him at an event in Hamilton several years ago. He actually remembered me despite all the years that had passed. I send you my sympathy on the loss of a good man and a great teacher. Mary K. Nolan, Dundas
