Obituary for Emily Soroka

Emily  Soroka
Emily Soroka of Ottawa, Ontario passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the age of 98 years. She was born in Wroxton, Saskatchewan on February 8, 1920 to Steve and Frances, the third oldest of seven daughters and one son. As a young woman she moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario and then to Windsor where she met her husband-to-be Peter Soroka. They shared a love of dancing and card playing which continued through their 50 years of marriage. They were married on June 16, 1945 and the following year welcomed son Gary, and later moved to the Tillsonburg area where daughter Patricia was born, eventually making their life in Burlington, Ontario. With Emily being of Ukrainian descent, their home was often filled with the aroma of borscht, cabbage rolls and perogies. She kept a beautiful garden and many were a recipient of her delicious canning. Emily is survived by her loving family; daughter Patricia (Gerry), daughter-in-law Donna, granddaughters Jillian (Scott), Vanessa (Bernadette), Kristen and grandson Peter. She was also proud great-grandmother to Emma, Sophie and Kallan. Emily was predeceased by her husband Peter, son Gary and granddaughter Tricia “Sunny”. She is also survived by her sisters Mary and Eleanor, and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Lookout Lounge of the Colonel By Residence in Ottawa (43 Aylmer Ave). A Memorial Service and reception will follow on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Smith’s Funeral Home in Burlington (485 Brant Street).
