Obituary for Marian Cairine Teresa Garside (MacDonald)

Marian Cairine Teresa Garside (MacDonald)
GARSIDE, Marian Cairine Teresa (nee MacDonald)

It is with great sadness that we announce Marian’s passing at the age of 85 at Joseph Brant Hospital. Marian was surrounded by her loving husband of 63 years Don and her 5 adoring children; Jay (Leanne), Lynnet, Kimberly, Barry (Helen) and Gayle.

Marian’s life has been enlivened by her 4 grandchildren, Drew (Natalie), Melissa (Michael), Samantha and Hannah and the advent of her 4 great-grandchildren Leah, Chloe, Matthew and William.

Marian was predeceased by her brother Dr. Ronald MacDonald and will be missed by her sister-in-law Jean MacDonald as well as nieces Elaine, Teresa, Clare, Laura, Carmen and Rebecca.

Marian was a devoted mother and her family will be forever grateful to her for all the exceptional love and caring that she provided. Among her friends Marian was known for her humorous responses and her ability to come up with a comic saying for all situations. As a result of losing her father, Captain Walter MacDonald, in the war, Marian began working as a telephone operator for Bell Canada at the age of 16. By age 19 Marian had become a Long-Distance Supervisor. After raising her 5 children, Marian returned to work as a clerk for the Co-operator’s Insurance Co. When Marian retired 20 years later she was the Manager of 5 Insurance offices.

In recent years Marian introduced three valuable events into her life: Daily visits to Tim Hortons with daughter Kim, cheering for the Blue Jays and a nightcap of red wine.

Marian often remarked that her life reached unexpected levels of happiness especially when it came to family events. She cherished family dinners for 14 and loved family vacations.

Marian and Don spent 63 wonderful years together. They are long time members of the Burlington Golf and Country Club and enjoyed curling together across Canada, USA, Europe and Russia. Many international friendships were forged over the years. Last year in Basel Switzerland they were presented with Scrolls while attending their 43rd World’s Curling Championships, recognizing them as the longest standing attendees.

We will all mourn the loss of Marian.

The family is thankful for the great nursing care of Daniel and Oliver in the ICU at Joseph Brant Hospital.

As per Marian’s wishes, Private Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will take place at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church (287 Plains Road East, Burlington), on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 1:00pm. A Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block north of City Hall), BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333, on Friday, December 29, 2017 from 5-8pm. A Private Celebration of Marian’s Life will be held in January 2018. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Marian’s memory to The Carpenter Hospice would be sincerely appreciated.
