Passed away peacefully on Friday, October 6, 2017 at the age of 89. Survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Dorothy (nee Davey). Dear father to Karen (Scott), David (Jane), and Bruce (Marion). Proud grandpa/papa to Carolyn, Robert, Christopher, Patrick, Gregory, Jeffrey, Thomas, Mathew, and Lauren. John was a Professional Engineer who worked for Stelco for 45 years in the metallurgical department, where he designed and patented the electrolytic macroetcher for the quality testing of cast steel. He subsequently consulted with Hatch on world-wide installations of this equipment and was actively involved in the ASTM for many years. John was a recipient of the Order of Niagara from the Anglican Diocese for his longstanding service to the Anglican Church of Canada and was a passionate and life-long learner who was a wealth of knowledge on just about everything! John had a love of photography, travel and warm-water snorkeling. Private cremation has taken place. A Service of Remembrance will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block North of City Hall), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 1 p.m. followed by a reception at the funeral home. Friends are invited to gather at the funeral home for visitation from 12 noon until the time of service. Memorial donations in memory of John may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
