Obituary for John Andrew Martin

MARTIN, John Andrew (1962-2017)

Sadly we announce the sudden passing of John on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the age of 55. Beloved husband of Cathy and cherished father to James and Julie. Dear brother to Thomas, Douglas (Gina), Helen(Terry McDonald), James(Patricia) and brother-in-law, Bill Milani and Cathy’s Zio Giovanni. Much loved uncle to Mathew, Steven, Ashley, Tess, Aiden, Kaily and Victoria.
Predeceased by his parents James and Sarah Martin. John will be greatly missed by his family at Niagara Emergency Medical Service and Hamilton Central Ambulance Centre.

Born and raised in Grimsby, John attended Lakeview Public School and Grimsby Secondary School. He graduated from Mohawk College in the Civil Engineering Technician Program and from Niagara College in the Ambulance Program. John also worked at Stelco with his father and brothers in the 1980’s.

John was an avid baseball fan, especially the Toronto Blue Jays. He also enjoyed the many trips to the Coca Cola Field to see the Buffalo Bisons farm team to the Jays play with his son and work brothers. He enjoyed sports of all kinds and was also a BIG fan of Prime Time Sports Show with Bob McCowan as well as listening to Blue Jays games live on the FAN590.

John enjoyed geography and history and could readily provide historical details and information on a great number of topics, world events, history, geographic and current events with great detail for clarity and understanding. He was well read and loved Google Earth. John loved to share his knowledge of the history of his hometown of Grimsby.

He loved the outdoors and most enjoyed walking in green spaces and along waterfront areas all over Ontario. John loved taking his young family camping throughout Ontario and Allegheny State Park in NY state. John loved to drive. Many road trips to hockey tournaments with the GMHA provided wonderful family experiences and opportunities to discover and visit different cities and communities. John loved Cleveland and memorable trips to see the Indians play will be always cherished by Cathy. John also loved vacationing in Cuba. He had a great love for the Cuban people and would love planning what footwear and Blue Jays fan wear he would bring to give to his Cuban friends.

John was a quiet man who loved his family. He was a great provider and while he struggled with the pressures of the career, he soldiered on to the end in the only way he knew how...privately and without fanfare. He was proud to be a member of this important team and he considered so many of the first responders in various services his friends. He recently celebrated 25 years of service with NEMS.

John enjoyed tinkering, building and fixing things...even though the projects rarely finished without frustrating and challenging complications. He enjoyed working with his son, James on many projects around the house. The extensive kitchen renovation in 2013 was a wonderful family collaboration. The entire project was completed in 2 months time.

John was a humble man who never sought the limelight. He was well respected amongst his co-workers and friends. He will be greatly missed.

An informal visitation will take place here at STONEHOUSE-WHITCOMB FUNERAL HOME, 11 Mountain Street, GRIMSBY (905-945-2755) on Saturday, July 22, 2017 from 1-3p.m.

Donations can be made to:
- Heart Niagara ( https://heartniagara.com/about/ )
- The Bruce Trail Conservancy ( https://brucetrail.org/store/donate )
- or to the family directly

Donation Cards and Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.

Parking is very limited at the funeral home and Town of Grimsby public parking lot next door and should be expected to be busy with local shoppers on Saturday at that time. Additional parking in Food Basics plaza across the street as well as some parking in the church across the street. On Christie Street behind the Giant Tiger there is parking within a short walk. There should be easy parking to be found on Main Street West and in the Trinity United Church parking lot. As this is an informal visitation, casual clothing is welcomed along with comfortable footwear and walking sandals...so if you don’t mind a 10-15 minute walk, you can also park on Whittaker, Fairview, Lakeview near Lakeside Drive and walk over town to the funeral home. Parking at Forty Mile Creek Parking Lot at the bottom of Elizabeth Street along the waterfront is available too (20 minute walk).

Make sure if you are planning to come to our home following the visitation, please feel free to bring a Blue Jays t-shirt, jersey, baseball cap to wear or change into.

John would never have wanted or expected this kind of turnout, recognition or fanfare. James, Julie and I however are most grateful for the outpouring of love and support from each and every one of you whether you have messaged me, called, prayed and kept us close in your thoughts. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Cathy.
