Obituary for Noel Charles Shanks

Noel Charles Shanks
Noel Charles, peacefully on May 6 in hospital in Burlington, Ont. Noel was born Christmas Day 1922 in Sharbot Lake, Ont. An RCAF veteran of the Second World War, Noel flew 29 missions as a rear gunner in an RAF Lancaster bomber, including over Normandy on D-Day. He met King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and the then Princess Elizabeth. Upon his return to Canada, Noel met and married his wife, Eileen, with whom he worked for many years at Air Canada, with postings in Montreal, Florida and Trinidad. Always curious, Noel was a born tinkerer who built his own sailboat, tandem bicycle and got at least partway through building an airplane in his basement. Noel adored young people, who shared his wide-eyed enthusiasm for the world. He treated his many nieces and nephews as his own. He is survived by his sisters Rose Switzer (Kingston) and Adah Crawford (Vancouver), 16 nieces and nephews and his good friends Brent, Jenifer and Jacob Long. He is predeceased by Eileen, his brothers John, Robert and Howard, and his sister Lois Boles. Visitation at Smith Funeral Home (905-632-3333), 1167 Guelph Line in Burlington on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. with burial to follow at a later date in Sharbot Lake. A generous, caring and kind man, Noel will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Donations in Noel’s memory may be made to the Pineland Public School Music Program in Burlington (www.haltonlearningfoundation.ca –Donations In Memoriam) or to the charity of your choice.
