Obituary for Sheila M. Favreau

Sheila M. Favreau
Sheila was born July 18, 1923 in St. John’s Newfoundland, and as a little girl she always wondered what was beyond “the Narrows” from St. John’s harbor, and that wonder grew to a great love of travel. She had six siblings, and together they had a very happy childhood, and were fiercely loyal to each other. As a little girl, she was given the task of carrying the camera case. Her mother was quite the photographer, which led to her keeping many of the family photographs, and becoming the historian in the family along with her sister Eleanor. As a new bride, when her husband went overseas with the RCAF, she spent time in New York, working on Wall St. while living with her older sister Mary. She made the best of her time there, going to musicals, visiting historic Virginia, and Radio City Music hall.

She had a great love of history and music. She could recite poetry, and remembered her Latin well into her 90’s. She sang, danced, sewed, baked, and could play the piano beautifully. Sheila loved to laugh. She was also an accomplished artist, and many of her paintings grace the walls of her family’s homes.

When her daughters were older, she traveled with her younger sister and best friend, Eleanor. They had so many good times visiting Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Germany often visiting churches and city halls looking for family records. Another family wedding took her to South Africa, a place she used to dream about going as a child.

Sheila had a generous heart, and a very kind spirit, she volunteered, and helped anyone she could as much as she was able. She had a strong faith, which carried her through losing her beloved daughter Donna to cancer in 1992, and her husband in 2002.

She found beauty in all that she saw. She loved animals, and nature, and took pleasure in small things, as she had an optimistic nature, and never complained. Being true to her Newfoundland roots, if she could not find what she needed, she found a way to make it! She passed the torch of family historian to her niece Mary, who is grateful for all the photographs and stories that Sheila has shared with her. Sheila was a wonderful role model, as a woman, mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, and friend, and leaves a legacy of love.

She was loved deeply, and will be missed by so many, including the wonderful staff from Tansley Woods Long Term Care, where she spent her last days.

I SHALL PASS THIS WAY BUT ONCE, THEREFORE ANY GOOD THAT I CAN DO OR ANY KINDNESS THAT I CAN SHOW, LET ME DO IT NOW, FOR I SHALL NOT PASS THIS WAY AGAIN.

And that is how my dear mother lived her life.

Godspeed.
