Obituary for Peter Colin Dion Cushing

Peter Colin Dion Cushing
CUSHING, Peter C.D. -

Peter Colin Dion Cushing passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family at The Carpenter Hospice in Burlington, on Monday, April 17, 2017 at the age of 77, from Pulmonary Fibrosis. Beloved husband of Betty (nee Johnston) for 51 years. Loving father of Pamela, Lea (Maurizio Calconi), and Colin. Grandfather to Madelaine, Sebastien, Benjamin and Dominic. Dear brother of Sandra Halcrow (Kevin), Bill (Suzanne), the late Jack (Jeanine) and the late David.

Peter was born in Grand Falls, New Brunswick on September 25th, 1939. He graduated from John Caldwell High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from University of New Brunswick, Fredericton campus on a prestigious Beaverbrook Scholarship.

He then joined the manufacturing team at Procter and Gamble in Hamilton, ON. He continued to have a rich and productive 32-year career with them running plants in Pointe Claire, PQ, Belleville ON, and Mississauga as well as work in Pennsylvania and head office. Peter was well loved and respected by those he worked with for his great sense of humour, straight-forward, frank and fair leadership, and loyalty to those who reported to him. Always one for setting a goal, he aimed to be retired for as long as he worked. That did not quite happen, but he did succeed in visiting a hundred countries, with Mozambique being #100 in 2013. Peter loved adventure and had a boundless curiosity for politics, ethics, business news and meeting people of every stripe. He could find something interesting in anyone.

Peter and Betty were caring parents, always fully engaged in their kids’ activities. Alongside many great vacations as a family, they spent a lot of time together on shared interests- including skiing, tennis, bridge, and golf.

Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW) , BURLINGTON 905-632-3333, on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church (1371 Elgin Street, Burlington), on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 2:30pm with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Private Cremation to follow, with a private family interment at St. Luke’s Churchyard at a later date.

Donations in memory of Peter may be given to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The family thanks The Carpenter Hospice in Burlington, the CCAC, the Firestone Clinic in Hamilton, and Dr. M. Kolb and Dr. J. Tang.
