Obituary for Evon Nelda Lancaster (Jakes)

Evon Nelda Lancaster (Jakes)
Evon Lancaster

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Evon Nelda Lancaster (nee Jakes) at Hamilton General Hospital September 24, 2016 in her 89th year.
Predeceased by her husband Simon Barrington Lancaster, grandson Michael Lancaster and brothers, Dr. Harold Jakes and Robert Jakes. Survived by her son Roger Lancaster and his wife Sharon Lancaster- grandchildren Jenelle, Anthony and Joseph of Calgary and daughter Catherine Lancaster and her husband Tim Attridge and grandchildren Drew and Claire of Vancouver. Fondly remembered by her niece and nephews, Jeff and Lynn Jakes and Rob Jakes. Dearly loved by sister-in law, Carolyn Jakes and cousin Betty and extended family here in Canada and the UK.

Evon lived her life fully and with enthusiasm always looking for the next challenge. Her love of teaching, art, travel, volunteering and women’s issues made her many friends along the way. Her warmth, strength, sincerity and sense of humour was appreciated by all who knew her. She was a loving mom who would do anything for her kids and she reached a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Early teaching years were at a rural school in Carlisle and was followed by a memorable 35 yr. career with the Halton Board of Education as a teacher and principal, retiring in 1983. She was one of the first three woman principals in Halton County. Never one to slow down, Evon kept up the pace with volunteering at the Burlington Art Centre for many years, as well as Telecare, and the Royal Botanical Gardens. She stayed connected professionally with her peers through Zonta, Probus, RTO/ERO and FWTOA.

She travelled extensively around the world always wishing to experience new things. Evon had a very active personal life. She loved socializing with her bridge groups over the years and she chalked up many miles with her friends going to live theatre, bus trips and the movies. She loved a good book and making sure she was up to date with friends and family alike, never forgetting anyone. She loved her family dearly and supported all of our endeavours.

Evon touched many lives through her lifetime, both young and old alike. With her cheerful and positive perspective she brightened any encounter and encouraged others to achieve their goals.
She will be missed by so many. "She was one of the good ones"
Love you mom.
