Don Smith

Don Smith is Owner and President of Smith’s Funeral Homes, with locations in Burlington, Grimsby and Stoney Creek and a co-owner of Canadian Cremation Services, Hamilton.  A lifetime resident of Burlington, Don is a graduate of Burlington Central High School and the Banting Institute at the University of Toronto.

Don profoundly believes in giving back to his community.  He is a Past Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board (Hamilton/Burlington), a Member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of Burlington, a Member of Wellington Square Lodge No. 725 A.F. & A.M., Burlington, a 32° Member of the Scottish Rite, Hamilton and a former Elder and Lay Preacher in the United Church of Canada.  Don is also Co-founder of both the Burlington Bereavement Resource Council and the Burlington Estate and Financial Planning Council.

Don has also actively participated in local healthcare issues.  He was a Telecare Resource Panel Volunteer and the Co-Chairman of Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital “Tomorrow is Here” Capital Campaign 2000-2001.

In 2000, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce recognized Smith’s Funeral Homes with the Community Service Award and Burlington’s Company of the Year Award.

In 2008, Don was named Philanthropist of the Year (Halton Region) by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.  In 2009, he was named Burlington Community Foundation’s Philanthropist of the Year, and was also the recipient of the Ontario Funeral Service Association Humanitarian Award.  In 2010, Don was also recognized as a YMCA Peace Medal Winner.

Don also served a five-year, undefeated term as Alderman with the City of Burlington.  In 1997, Don received the Mayor’s Community Service Award for the City of Burlington.

Under Don’s leadership, Smith’s was the first Canadian funeral home to receive a “Pursuit of Excellence Recognition” from the National Funeral Directors Association of the United States.

Don’s passion for environmentally sustainable business practices led Smith’s Funeral Homes to become the first Canadian funeral business certified by the Green Burial Council, an international non-profit organization.

Stewardship is not a new passion for Don Smith.  In his words, “I see it as my family’s ministry and legacy,” says Don, “I am the steward of all the hard work and sacrifices of those in my family who have gone before me.”
